What does the Bible say about Snow?

The Bible refers to snow quite a number of times, 23 times in the New International Version to be exact. Perhaps the most well-known verse in the Bible about these ice crystals from the sky can be found in Isaiah. God speaks of our sins being like scarlet, but they shall be white as snow.

Snow In The Scriptures

(Isaiah 1:18) “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

We find another popular Scripture about snow in the Book of Revelation. In John’s vision that he received while on the island of Patmos, he describes the Son of Man as having hair that was white as snow.

(Revelation 1:14) The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.

Yet another Scripture tells us about one of David’s mighty men by the name of Benaiah going down into a pit an a snowy day and killing a lion.

(2 Samuel 23:20) Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.

Snow is most often used in the Bible as a way to describe the whiteness of something such as leprous skin (Exodus 4:6, 2 Kings 5:27) or clothes (Daniel 7:9, Mathew 28:3).

They Didn’t Have Refrigerators, But They Did Have Snow

Snow is believed to have been used by some in the Bible times to cool their drinks during the hotter times of the year. It is thought they may have brought some of the white stuff down from the cleft of rocks, or even stored it in vessels underground to be used later for an ice cold beverage.

(Proverbs 25:13) Like a snow-cooled drink at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to the one who sends him; he refreshes the spirit of his master.

Flurries In The Modern Day Bible Lands

In (Jeremiah 18:14) the question is asked, “Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes?” These are the same mountain peaks and slopes that we know today remain covered with snow a majority of the year. Even Jerusalem is known to get one to two days of the white stuff per year.
