The “age of accountability” is when someone reaches a certain age in their life where they are to be held morally responsible and accountable for their sins. The Bible does not give us an exact age for this. While some believe this to be around 12-13 years old, it will depend on the maturity level of a child.
The exact term “age of accountability’ is not in the Bible. However, the concept comes from the following scriptures from the Old Testament.
(Isaiah 7:15-16) By the time He knows enough to reject evil and choose good, He will be eating curds and honey. For before the boy knows enough to reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.
A Child Will Know
As the above scriptures mention, their will come a time when a child will know enough to reject evil and choose good. At some point in each child’s life, they will have enough understanding about their need to follow God’s plan of salvation, that their soul will be held responsible for their decision as to whether they accept or reject his plan.
Each of us will give an account of himself to God (Romans 14:12), and once a person knows the right thing to do and yet doesn’t do it, for that person it becomes sin (James 4:17).
