What does the Bible say about anointing oil?
The Bible Answer
The use of anointing oil can be found throughout the Old Testament. Aaron and his sons were anointed with oil when they were consecrated to serve as priests for God (Exodus 30:30). The people of Israel were given specific ingredients that were to be blended together to make the holy anointing oil (Exodus 30:23-25). The oil was not to be poured on the body of any ordinary person, and it was to be treated as holy. (Exodus 30:32)
Old Testament Kings Anointed With Oil
Oil was used to anoint kings of the Old Testament. Saul, along with the future King David were both anointed with olive oil at different times by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 10:1, 1 Samuel 16:13). In (Psalms 89:20), the Bible says, “I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil.”
Anointing Oil In The New Testament
Anointing people with oil who are sick is referred to twice in the New Testament. (Mark 6:13) says , “And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.”
The Scripture that speaks directly to the New Testament Church of today regarding the use of anointing oil is (James 5:14-15). It says, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.”
There is no healing power in the oil itself, the power is from God. Even so, it is having faith in God and obedience to his Word that can and does bring supernatural healings. Many who have obeyed this verse and had elders of the Church anoint them with oil as they were prayed for can testify of the healing miracles that have come from simply doing what the Bible says. Faith and obedience in God and his Word are a powerful combination!
