Should men have long hair according to the Bible? We need to go no further than 1 Corinthians 11 to find our answer to this question.
A Disgrace For A Man
1 Corinthians 11:14-15 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering”.
Head Covering Means Long Hair
When the Bible is speaking about a covering for the head in this chapter, it is talking about long hair. This can be seen in verse 15 above where it says long hair is given to a woman for a covering.
Keep this in mind when reading 1 Corinthians 11:4, where it says, “Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered (with long hair) dishonors his head”.
Again we read in 1 Corinthians 11:7, “A man ought not to cover his head (with long hair), since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man”.
Short Hair For Men, Long Hair For Women
We see that it is just the opposite for women in verse 5 of the same chapter. It says that every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered (without long hair) dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. (1 Corinthians 11:5)
The chapter ends with verse 16 saying, “If anyone wants to argue about this, I simply say that we have no other custom than this, and neither do God’s other churches”.
