All cultures throughout the centuries have had what is considered to be foul language, swear words, dirty words, curse words, or profanity. As Christians we can rest assured the Bible gives us clear instructions about the use of such language in our vocabulary.
Who Decides What Makes a Word a Curse Word
No one person gets to decide what words are considered to be profanity. The culture of each language as a whole decides what is considered to be foul language. By the time we become adults, and most often way before then, we all know what the bad words are that got our mouths washed out with soap as young ones. A few expressions may be up for debate as to whether they should be considered profanity, however most everyone agrees upon what the universally accepted profanities are.
Take for instance the 2 four letter words that begin with F— and S—. They are probably the most used of the modern day English language cuss words. One is referring to a sexual act and the other is human waste. In the context that these words are always used it doesn’t fit with the kind of words a Christian should be using. (Colossians 4:6) says, “Let your conversation be gracious and attractive.” There’s just not much gracious or attractive about these words.
Another often used word we all have heard at some point is “GD”. I even cringe a little just writing the abbreviation of this very irresponsible choice of words. Is there not a more obvious way to disobey the commandment found in (Exodus 20:7). Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
The Bible Answer About Foul Language (Profanity)
The following Scriptures not only forbid us from using foul language (profanity), but encourages us to speak words that are good, helpful, and encouraging.
(Ephesians 4:29) Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. NLT
(Ephesians 5:4) Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. NIV
(James 3:9-10) With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. NIV
