Brimstone is a bright yellow mineral substance that can be found in plentiful amounts on the shores of the Dead Sea. It can usually be found near active volcanoes as well. Brimstone literally means burning stone. In modern times it is called sulfur/sulphur, and is known for its foul odor. Various translations of the Bible refer to the burning stone as sulfur instead of brimstone.
Fire And Brimstone In The Bible
God rained down fire and brimstone on the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in a fiery judgement that destroyed not only these two cities, but the entire plain as well. Also destroyed were all those living in the cities along with all the vegetation in the land. (Genesis 19:24-25). Isaiah 34:9 makes reference to the destruction of these cities.

(Revelation 19:20) Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
