Is the Coronavirus mentioned in the Bible?

Coronavirus (Covid-19) and Social Distancing, two things you probably had never heard of before this year. With all the images of masked people and empty grocery shelves etched in our minds, most of us will never forget them. Does the Bible in anyway mention this Coronavirus that caused such panic in our world?

How is yes and no for an answer? On the one hand, you obviously won’t find the Coronavirus mentioned specifically by name in the Bible. On the other hand, the Bible does refer to things such as this virus in broader terms.

The Coronavirus Is A Pestilence

Jesus mentioned pestilences in Mathew 24 as one of the things that would occur before his second coming. Considering the word pestilence means a fatal epidemic disease, the Coronavirus could certainly qualify.

(Mathew 24:7) For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

It’s Just The Beginning

One thing we have to keep in mind is there have been other pestilences from previous centuries that have killed millions. From the Black Plague of the early 1900’s, to the Spanish Flu of 1347, there have been numerous viruses and diseases since Jesus said these words in Matthew. The point being, pestilences have occurred, and will continue to happen until his return, just as he said they would.

In the very next verse after Mathew 24:7, Jesus says these are the beginning of sorrows. It’s just the beginning folks. Only Jesus knows when it ends.
