The word deacon comes from the Greek word diakonos. It means a servant or waiter. Although they were not called deacons at the time, the traditional view is the role of a deacon originated in (Acts 6) with the selection of “The Seven.”
Why The First Seven Deacons Were Chosen
The early Church was growing rapidly. The Greek believers became upset with the Hebrew believers, saying that their widows were not being given their fair share in the daily distribution of food.
This led the Twelve Apostles to call a meeting of all the believers. They told the believers that as Apostles they should not be giving up preaching God’s message in order to be serving at tables. The believers were instructed to choose seven wise and respected men who were full of the Spirit. It appears these men would be given the responsibility of running the food program so the apostles could spend their time praying and preaching.
Seven men were chosen and presented to the Apostles, who prayed for them and laid their hands on them. (Acts 6:1-7) This seems to be the beginning of the role of deacons in the Church.
Qualifications For A Deacon
The qualifications of a deacon are clearly laid out in (1 Timothy 3:8-12). Deacons must:
1. Be Dignified
To be honorable and of a serious nature.
2. Not Be Double-Tongued
Deceitful and two faced. Saying one thing to one person and something different to another person.
3. Not Given to Much Wine
Not addicted to wine or other drink.
4. Not Be Greedy For Dishonest Gain
Not greedy for money.
5. Hold The Mystery Of The Faith With A Clear Conscience
Deacons must have a clear conscience and hold firmly to what God has shown them about their faith.
6. Be Tested And Found Blameless
They must be closely examined and prove themselves blameless.
7. Deacon’s Wives
A deacon must have a wife that is honorable, not slanderers of others, sober and temperate, and faithful in everything they do.
8. Be The Husband Of One Wife

9. Must Rule Household And Children Well
A deacon must be able to manage his own (family) household and children well.
The Role Of A Deacon
The Bible does not provide much information as to the exact duties and role of a deacon. Because “The Seven” were chosen to help the Apostles by meeting some of the daily food needs of the Church in Acts, we can assume the role and purpose of deacons continued to be assisting the Church leaders by serving the physical needs of the Church in various forms.
Greetings To The Deacons
Deacons are mentioned only once more in the Bible. In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, the deacons are greeted along with the saints and Church leaders.
(Philippians 1:1-2) Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
