What Did Jesus Mean When He Said Do Not Cast Your Pearls Before Swine (Mathew 7:6)

Swine

In (Mathew 7:6) Jesus said, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.” What did Jesus mean when he said not to cast your pearls before swine?

Pearls Before Swine, No Appreciation

What Jesus is saying is for us not to share the gospel with those who do not have a heart to receive it. In this verse these type of people are compared to dogs and swine who would have no appreciation for the sacred gospel that is being presented to them.

Just as swine would trample the pearls under their feet, some people would do the same with the gospel. There are those who have no desire to hear Christians share the salvation message with them.

Wise As Serpents

(Mathew 10:16) says, “I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Part of being wise as serpents is recognizing when someone is not going to receive our attempts to present the gospel to them. People who will do nothing but make fun of and ridicule those who present the gospel to them, these are the ones to walk away from.

As (Mathew 10:14) says, “If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.” It is our responsibility to share the gospel (Mark 16:15) to those who will listen, but it isn’t our job to continually beat people over the head with something they don’t won’t to hear in the first place.

Some Will Recognize A Pearl

With that being said, there are people who will gladly receive the gospel message. They will recognize a pearl when they see one, and it will save their soul!
