Around 85% of the world’s population belongs to a religious group. While it is impossible to know the exact number of religions there are in the world, most estimates place the amount to be over 4000. Some place the number as high as 10,000 different religions, faiths, beliefs, churches, and denominations.
The Major Religions
Of these 4000 plus religions, the biggest majority of people in the world belong to one of the five major religions. These five major religions are Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism.
Christianity is the largest religion in the world, with close to a third of the worlds population (over 2 billion) identifying as Christians. Within Christianity there is believed to be as many as 45,000 different denominations. Examples of some of the larger Christian denominations include Pentecostals, Catholics, Baptists, and Methodists. Of these denominations, Pentecostalism is the fastest growing.
Islam is the second largest religion, with around 25% of the world’s population being Muslim. Islam is also the fastest growing religion in the world.
Of the major religions, Judaism is the smallest. Less than 1% of the world identifies as being Jews. The vast majority of Jews live in Israel and the United States.
The Unaffiliated
Those who say they are not affiliated with any religion is over 15% of the world’s population. If this group was considered to be a religion it would be essentially tied with Hinduism as the third largest in the world.
