Was Jesus a Jew?
A Descendant Of David
Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. On his mother’s side he was a descendant of David, leaving no doubt he was indeed a Jew. Beginning with the first verse in the New Testament, the Bible makes numerous references to the link between Jesus and David.
(Mathew 1:1) This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham
(Romans 1:3) concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh ESV
(2 Timothy 2:8) Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel,
The Lion of The Tribe of Judah
The word “Jew” originates from the Hebrew word “Yehudi“, which means, “from the Tribe of Judah.”
(Revelation 5:5) Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed.
(Hebrews 7:14) For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
Others Referred To Jesus As A Jew
From Pilate asking Jesus if he was the king of the Jews, to the Samaritan woman making the statement that he was a Jew, the people in the Bible acknowledged that Jesus was of Jewish ethnicity.
(Mark 15:2) “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
(John 4:9) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
Teaching In The Temple
The fact that Jesus taught in the Jewish temple each day would not have went over very well if he were not a Jew (Luke 21:37). One of the reasons the Jews of Asia were able to get a whole crowd stirred up against Paul was by saying that he had defiled the temple by bringing Greeks into it. (Acts 21:28)
