King David, the man after God’s own heart, appeared to have died of natural causes at 70 years of age. (1 Kings 1:1) describes David as being old and advanced in years. It says no matter how many blankets covered him, he could not keep warm.
At this point his servants said to him, “Let us find a young woman who can wait on you and lie in your arms to keep you warm.” A woman named Abishag the Shunammite, who is described as being very beautiful was found. The Bible says she attended to the king, but specifies that they had no sexual relations. (1 King 1:2-4)
King David’s Deathbed Advice And Instruction
King David knew his time to die had drew near. He called for his son Solomon, telling him, “I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man. Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go. If you do this, then the Lord will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.” (1 Kings 2:2-4) NLT
After giving instruction to Solomon, David rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. (1 Kings 2:10) The Bible says he died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth, and honor. (1 Chronicles 29:28)
