There are a total of four men named Philip in the Bible. They include an Apostle, an evangelist, and two sons of King Herod the Great.
1. Philip The Apostle
Philip was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. The Apostle Philip was from the city of Bethsaida in Galilee, the same town as Andrew and Peter (John 1:44). He is the disciple who tried to calculate how much it would cost to feed the 5000 (John 6:7). The last time the Bible mentions him is when he is in the upper room praying with others. According to tradition, he was said to have been tortured and crucified upside down in the city of Hierapolis.
2. Philip The Evangelist
This Philip was one of the first seven deacons. He would later become an evangelist to the city of Samaria (Acts 8:5) and other towns, including Caesarea (Acts 8:40). He also baptized an Ethiopian eunuch in (Acts 8:36-38) and was visited by Paul in (Acts 21:8).
3. Philip The Tetrarch (A Son of Herod the Great)
(Luke 3:1) In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar–when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene–
4. Philip (Another Son of Herod the Great)
These two sons of Herod the Great both shared the same name, but had different mothers.
(Mathew 14:3) For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip).
