The Moral Argument for the existence of God is based on the observation that because all humans have the same general idea of what is right and wrong morally, these morals had to have come from a higher being, therefore proving the existence of God. We find that acts such as killing, stealing, child abuse, and rape are universally accepted as being morally wrong by anyone who is a rational human being. If there is no God who instills these similar moral values into people, then where do they come from?
The Moral Argument vs Relativism
Some atheists attempt to argue for an idea known as relativism, the belief that each individual or society gets to decide what is right and wrong for themselves. With this way of thinking, what is right or wrong for one person may be different from that of another individual. The problem with relativism is if one person or culture decides that something such as murder or stealing is acceptable, then how would anyone else be able to say it was wrong. Remember, with this mindset each individual gets to decide what is right and wrong. There is no higher being (God) that sets the moral standard with relativism. In the end, relativism fails to explain how and why all humans share the same moral standards.
Morals Are Written Into Our Hearts
The Bible says it best in the Book of Romans. God has written it in our hearts as to what is morally right and wrong. Our conscience is defined as an inner feeling or voice that acts as a guide to whether one’s behavior is right or wrong. Many choose to ignore this God-given conscience, sometimes to the point that their conscience becomes dead.
(1 Timothy 4:2) Nevertheless, whether we choose to listen to our conscience or ignore it, these basic principles of what is good and evil that are instilled in us comes from God.
(Romans 2:15) They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. NLT
