Jesus said that no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born again of the water and the Spirit (John 3:5). It is obedience to this Gospel message that leads us to salvation. With that being said, the question is often asked, “What happens to those who have never had a chance to hear about Jesus and the gospel? Will they go to hell?” Images of tribes that are located in remote jungles, or people who live on some undiscovered island somewhere often come to mind?
They Have No Excuse
We are given a direct answer to this question in the book of Romans.
(Romans 1:20) For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. NLT (Romans 1:23) And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. NLT
No one will have an excuse for not knowing God. Through everything that God has made, his eternal power and divine nature can clearly be seen. It is what each individual does with what can clearly be seen that will make the difference. Some will seek for more understanding about an obvious creator. Others will chase after their own desires and idols.
God Seeks Those Who Seek Him
The Bible says that those who seek God with all their heart will find him. (Deuteronomy 4:29) (Proverbs 8:17) It also says that God is looking down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who are seeking him (Psalm 14:2). Knowing that God is looking for people who seek him, we can rest assured that anyone who truly wants to know God, they will have the gospel provided to them, regardless of how remote of an area they may live in. God will make a way.
When we receive the Holy Spirit, we also receive power to be witnesses for God to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Many missionaries over the years have used this power from the Holy Spirit to carry this gospel message all over the world. The same God who is looking for those who seek him will send these seekers of truth a witness armed with the gospel. The gospel of the kingdom will be preached to the whole world! (Mathew 24:14)
