Current events in the world, whether it be the outcome of presidential elections, or just the moral decay of our society, often bring about conversations of the second coming of Jesus Christ. Some are even so bold as to predict the exact timing of his return. This brings us to our question. What and when is the second coming of Jesus?
The First Coming Of Jesus
In his first coming God came to earth as the man Jesus Christ. He was born in a manger, grew up to do many miracles, and in the end he payed the ultimate sacrifice for our sins with his death on the cross. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. After appearing to many over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God, Jesus ascended into heaven.
As the men of Galilee watched on while Jesus was taken up into a cloud, two angels in the form of men suddenly appeared among them. They asked the question, “Why do you stand here looking into the sky?” They then made the statement, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”(Acts 1:11) This is what is referred to as the second coming.
Jesus was taken up in a cloud, and he is coming back in the clouds.
(Revelation 1:7) Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all peoples on earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.
John’s Description Of The Second Coming
In (Revelation 19:11-16), John provides us with a description of the second coming.
Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
The Difference Between The Second Coming And The Rapture
The second coming and the rapture are two separate events that are often confused. The rapture refers to when Jesus will descend from heaven and the dead Christians will rise from their graves. They, along with those saved individuals who are alive, will be caught up together in the clouds to meet Jesus in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). The rapture will take place before the second coming.
In the second coming these raptured saints will return with Jesus to the earth.
(Revelation 19:14) The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.
When Is The Second Coming?
In (Mathew Ch 24), the disciples asked Jesus what would be the sign of his coming and the end of the age. Jesus said there would be wars and rumors of wars. Nation will rise against nation. There will be famines, earthquakes, and an increase in wickedness. These are just the beginning of birth pains. Jesus then said, “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
Much can be written about the many guesses that have been made concerning the exact day and hour when Jesus will return. So much confusion could be avoided if everyone would simply follow what the Bible teaches about such matters. (Mathew 24:36) says, but about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
We are told that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again?” The Scriptures tell us to remember one thing. A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t being slow about his promise, but he is being patient. He doesn’t want anyone to perish, but wants everyone to repent. Nevertheless, the day will come unexpectedly, and it will be like a thief in the night. (2 Peter 3:3-10)
Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be with the second coming. The people were eating, drinking, and marrying right up until the time Noah entered the Ark. They were oblivious to what would happen until the flood came and swept them all away. (Mathew 24:37-39)
The Bible tells us to turn from ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives, while we wait for the blessed hope, which is the appearing of the glory of our great God, the second coming of Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:12-13)
Although we don’t know the exact timing if his return, rest assured, Jesus is coming back!
