Some might say you either love them or hate them. More probably say they hate them. We’re talking about spiders. Like them or not, have you ever wondered if spiders are in the Bible?
The amount of times spiders are mentioned in the Bible depends on what version of the Bible you are looking at. Again, depending on the version, spiders appear in the Bible 2-4 times. As you will see below, when translating two of the Scriptures, some versions of the Bible do not use the English word spider. In one verse we find the original word was translated to be a lizard, in another it was a moth.
The Spider Scriptures
(Job 8:13-15) Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless. What they trust in is fragile; what they rely on is a spider’s web. They lean on the web, but it gives way; they cling to it, but it does not hold.
(Isaiah 59:5) They hatch the eggs of vipers and spin a spider’s web.
Spider / Lizard
(Proverbs 30:28)
The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, And it is in kings’ palaces. NKJV
A lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces. NIV
Spider / Moth
(Job 27:18)
The wicked build houses as fragile as a spider’s web, as flimsy as a shelter made of branches. NLT
The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. NIV
More Spider Webs Than Spiders
As you can see, the spider’s web actually gets more mentions in the Bible than the spider. Even if spiders are disliked by most people, their ability to create webs from the silk they produce is pretty neat. You might even call a spider web sparkling in the sunlight beautiful, at least if you didn’t know there is probably one of the eight legged arachnids awaiting nearby to catch their prey.
