What is a Theist?

A theist is someone who believes in the existence of a God who is the creator of the world and the human race. Theism is the opposite of atheism and the atheist, who denies the existence of God. A theist is also different from an agnostic, who believes it isn’t possible to know or prove the existence of God.

The term theist can be traced all the way back to theologian Ralph Cudworth in the 1600’s. He said, “They are strictly and properly called Theists, who affirm, that a perfectly conscious understanding being, or mind, existing of itself from eternity, was the cause of all other things.”

A theist has no problem accepting the truth of (Genesis 1:1). It simply states that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
