What did Jesus look like in the Bible? What will Jesus look like when we see him in heaven? Did Jesus have long hair or short hair? Does the Bible have an answer for these questions?
What Did Jesus Look Like?
(Isaiah 53:2) He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
From reading Isaiah, we know that Jesus had no physical features that would have caused him to stand out among the men of his day. We can assume that as a Jew he had darker hair and skin color. Other than that, we are not given any other details about what Jesus looked like.
Did Jesus Have Long Hair?
(1 Corinthians 11:14-15) Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?
The Bible doesn’t say anything specifically about the length of Jesus’ hair, but from reading the above New Testament scripture, we can be assured it was not long. This would have gone directly against the Apostle Paul’s teaching. Even though this is an easy conclusion to make, a person does not have to look very hard these days to find a picture or painting of Jesus that will show him as having long hair.
These images of Jesus are based on artists’ ideas of what they think he may have looked like. They are not based on any historical evidence. It wasn’t until many centuries after the death of Jesus that these long-haired images even began to appear. Many researchers believe it was because some of the pagan gods of that day and time had long hair. This influenced many artists to paint Jesus with long hair as well.
What Will Jesus Look Like?
(Revelation 1:7) “Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him. “So shall it be! Amen.
(2 Corinthians 5:10) For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
It is certain we will all find out what Jesus looks like. What will he look like when we see him? From reading the following scriptures in Revelation, I think we will know him when we see him.
(Revelation 1:13-16) and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
It’s What Jesus Said That Really Matters
While there is nothing wrong with wondering if the Bible describes what Jesus looks like, it really isn’t of great importance. Paying attention to what he said is what matters. Those who spent time with him and wrote parts of the New Testament appeared to have the same mindset. They write in great detail about what he said and did, but they never told us what he looked like.
