What does the Color Purple represent in the Bible?

The color purple is the 4th most mentioned color in the Bible at 48 times. It is said to often times represent and symbolize royalty, kingship, wealth, and luxury. Let us take a look at just a few of the 48 times this color appears in the Bible to see if these representations hold to be true.

Purple In The Bible

(Royalty and Kingship)

The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment. They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head. (Mark 15:16-17)

The weight of the gold earrings was forty-three pounds, not including the royal ornaments and pendants, the purple clothing worn by the kings of Midian, or the chains around the necks of their camels. (Judges 8:26)

(Wealth and Luxury)

Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. (Luke 16:19)

She makes her own bedspreads. She dresses in fine linen and purple gowns. (Proverbs 31:22)

With just these few scriptures, we see the color purple does indeed represent, symbolize, and go hand in hand with royalty and wealth in the Bible. When the soldiers dressed Jesus in a purple robe, they were dressing the King of all kings. It wasn’t just coincidence the robe was the color it was.
