Who had the Most Children in the Bible?

Image of the words, "Who had the most children in the Bible?"When answering the question, “Who had the most children in the Bible?” a number of things have to be taken into consideration. Because the Bible does not always list by name all of an individuals children, nor does it always give us a total count of all the children that belonged to someone, there is no way of knowing who really had the most children in the Bible.

We can look at Solomon for an example. King Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3), yet the Bible only mentions one son (Rehoboam) and two daughters ( Taphath and Basemath) that belonged to him. With the number of wives and concubines that Solomon had it is very likely he had many more children than just the three that are recorded.

There are also instances in Scripture where only the number of sons are recorded, but not the daughters. For instance, Gideon is credited with having seventy sons by his many wives and one son by his concubine (Judges 8:30-31). There is a good probability with having this many sons that Gideon had a number of daughters as well. The Bible simply doesn’t tell us about the daughters in this case.

With all of that being said, we can answer the question of who is recorded in the Bible as having the most children, taking into consideration all of the above.

Rehoboam Is Recorded As Having The Most Children In The Bible

(2 Chronicles 11:21) Rehoboam loved Maakah daughter of Absalom more than any of his other wives and concubines. In all, he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.

Interestingly, it is Rehoboam the son of Solomon who the Bible records as having the most children. He had twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters for a total of 88 children. Although he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, this pales in comparison to the number of wives and concubines his father Solomon had. Because of this you can see how likely it is that someone like Solomon could have had more children than 88 if all of them would have been recorded in the Scriptures.
