Do Angels have Wings?

Blue and white angels wings.
How many of us have seen a picture of an angel that had wings? Most of us would have to raise our hands to this question. Do angels have wings as shown in these pictures? Are these spiritual beings winged according to the Bible?

Winged Angelic Beings

(Exodus 25:20) The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover.

(Isaiah 6:2) Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

Most people believe the cherubim and seraphim are two types of angelic beings. They are described in the Bible as having wings.

Most Of  The Time Angel’s Wings Are Not Mentioned

Even though we know the cherubim and seraphim are winged beings, most angelic appearances in the Bible involved angels appearing in human form with no mention of wings. The angels that appeared to Abraham in (Genesis 18) would be an example of this.

In (Hebrews 13:2) it says to show hospitality to strangers, because some people entertain angels without even being aware of it. This lets us know angels can appear to us as humans without us even knowing it. In these cases they most certainly do not have wings.

Flying Angels

(Revelation 14:6) Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth–to every nation, tribe, language and people.

A number of Scriptures describe angels flying, but there is no mention of wings. Whether they had wings in these cases or not, it wouldn’t have been necessary for them to fly. Unlike birds and airplanes, there is no need of wings for spirit beings to fly.

As spirit beings (Hebrews 1:14), even though they can appear to us, angels do not have to be in a visible form as we know it. When they are in their angelic heavenly form, the Bible does not tell us one way are the other if all angels have wings.
