How old was Sarah when she gave birth to Isaac?
The Ninety Something Year Old Momma
Sarah was ninety years old when God told her husband Abraham that he was going to bless Sarah and that she would give birth to a son. With her being ninety at the time God said this, she would have been ninety or ninety-one when she actually gave birth to Isaac. God’s promise to give Abraham and Sarah a child when he was 100 years old, and her ninety years of age, this was difficult for both of them to believe as they were both well past their child-bearing ages.
Abraham and Sarah Laughed
The Bible says Abraham laughed to himself in disbelief and thought, “How could I become a father at 100?” (Genesis 17:17). Sarah also laughed silently to herself when she overheard Abraham being told that she would have a son (Genesis 18:12). She found herself denying that she laughed when the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say can an old woman like me have a baby?” Even with their doubt, God told Abraham he would return the same time next year and she would have a son. (Genesis 18:14).
Because Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born, Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me. Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!”(Genesis 21:5-7)
God’s Sense of Humor
With the elderly couple being so far past the normal age for being able to have a child, we can see that nothing is to hard for God. It could also be said that for two people to have a baby at 100 and ninety years of age, God must have a sense of humor!
