It is estimated that approximately 10% of the world’s population is left-handed. With that being said, it would stand to reason not very many left-handed people should be found in the Bible if 90% of the population is right-handed. So just how many left-handed people are specifically mentioned in the Bible?
Technically speaking, we can say there are 701 left-handed people in the Bible. This would be the number if we don’t count the ambidextrous warriors found in (1 Chronicles 12:2). These expert archers could shoot arrows or slings with there left hand as well as there right. These warriors were not strictly left-handed, so we will leave them out of the equation.
701 Left-Handed People In the Bible
Where do we find the 701 left-handers in the Scriptures?
Ehud
(Judges 3:15) Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer–Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab.
Ehud was a left-handed judge whom God gave to the Israelites to deliver them from the Moabite people. The scriptures say Ehud used his left hand to pull the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the belly of Eglon, the king of Moab. (Judges 3:21)
Benjamin’s Elite Troops
(Judges 20:16) Among Benjamin’s elite troops, 700 were left-handed, and each of them could sling a rock and hit a target within a hairsbreadth without missing. (New Living Translation)
Benjamin’s 700 left-handed elite troops were no doubt deadly accurate with a rock and a sling. All 700 troops were left-handed. Today, different studies have shown left-handed people appear to be better than right-handed folks when it comes to certain tasks. These lefties in the Bible definitely seemed to have had some sort of advantage with their slingshot skills.
