A rainbow with trees and mountains in the background.
The appearance of a rainbow in the sky can be described as beautiful, awesome, and breathtaking! Rainbows are one of the greatest reminders to man-kind that there is a God. You certainly won’t find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but you will find a promise from God. What is this promise and the meaning of the rainbow in the Bible?

Rainbows In The Bible

Rainbows are first mentioned in the Bible after the flood in (Genesis Ch.9). They can be found three other times in Scripture as well.

(Ezekiel 1:28) Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.

(Revelation 4:3) The one sitting on the throne was as brilliant as gemstones–like jasper and carnelian. And the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow.

(Revelation 10:1) Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars.

The Meaning Of The Rainbow

Except for those who were on the ark with Noah, all life on earth was destroyed by a flood. After this event God made a covenant with man and all living creatures that never again would all life be destroyed by a flood. With God a promise made is a promise kept!

(Genesis 9:13-15) I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.
