What is a Red Letter Edition Bible?

Among Bible readers the phrase, “The words written in red” is a very familiar term. These red words people are referring to come from what is known as Red Letter Edition Bibles. These are Bibles in which the words of Jesus (also known as the Dominical words) have been highlighted in red ink.

What’s The Big Idea Behind The Red Letter Bible?

The idea behind printing a Bible that would have all of the words of Christ in red originated with Louis Klopsch in 1899. Klopsch, who was the editor of “The Christian Herald” magazine, said the inspiration for his thought came from the blood of Jesus that is referred to in (Luke 22.20).

(Luke 22:20) In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Red Letter Edition Bibles Could Do No Harm

When Klopsh asked his mentor Dr. T. Dewitt Talmage what is thoughts were in regards to having the words of Christ printed in red Talmage responded, “It could do no harm and it most certainly could do much good”. These versions of the Bible quickly became a favorite and preferred version of God’s Word for many back then, and they have remained very popular to this day.
