Is it biblical to pray to Mary, the mother of Jesus?
One Mediator, Jesus Christ
It is a common practice of many to pray to Mary. They believe her to be some sort of mediator between them and God. Others think they are able to ask Mary to pray to Jesus on their behalf.
This is quickly shown to be a non-biblical belief with the reading of 1 Timothy 2:5. It says, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”
For those who come to God through Jesus, he always lives to intercede for them (Hebrews 7:25). Jesus is the only go-between we will ever need. This leaves no room for Mary, or any other human being past or present, for us to be praying to. Prayer is to be directed to God, and him alone. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus (John 14:6).
Do Not Pray To Mary, Pray Directly To God
Throughout the entire Bible, not one example can be found where someone prayed to anyone other than God directly. However, we do find an example of how to the pray to the Father in (Luke 11:2). Jesus said to his listeners, “When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.”
Mary Was A Blessed Woman, But Still A Sinner
While it is true God blessed Mary above all women (Luke 1:42), she was still a sinner like everyone else. Mary was in need of salvation as we all are.
(Acts 1:14) finds Mary joining the disciples and a number of other people as they all pray to God while waiting for the promise of the Holy Ghost.
In (Luke 4:8) Jesus said, “You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.” Prayer and worship go hand in hand, and since we can go straight to Jesus with our prayers, there will never be a need for prayer to anyone else, including Mary.
