What Does The Bible Say About Healing?

Bible Scripture that says And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well. James 5:15

Sickness and death entered the world after Adam and Eve sinned. Knowing that sickness has plagued humans ever since then, what does the Bible say about healing?

Heals All Diseases

There are many Scriptures in the Bible that refer to physically being healed by God. David spoke of a God who would heal all your diseases.

(Psalm 103:3) Who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.

(Psalm 41:3) The LORD sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health. ESV

Jesus Healed Many

(Mathew 4:23) Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

(Luke 8:48) Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

(Luke 13:13) Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

(Luke 14:4) When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away. NLT

The Disciples Were Given Authority To Heal

(Mathew 10:1) Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

(Mathew 10:8) Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

We Can Be Healed Today

A physical healing from God is not limited to the people who lived in the days of Jesus or his disciples. The New Testament Church today is full of testimonies from people who have had faith in God for their healing and received it. From minor ailments to the worst of diseases, God is not limited to what he can heal.

Listed among the signs that will accompany those who believe in (Mark 16:17-18) is the laying on of hands of the sick. The Scripture says they will get well. The following Scriptures in the book of James speak directly to Christians who are sick.

(James 5:14-16) Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

God chooses to heal many in his Church today through a man of God. We read in the Bible where the sick came to Paul and were healed by his laying on of hands and prayer (Acts 28:8-9). God did extraordinary miracles through Paul to the point that sick people were being cured just by receiving handkerchiefs and aprons that had been touched by Paul (Acts 19:11-12).

God Will Not Always Heal Us Physically

While an individual needs faith to be healed, it is not always a lack of faith that prevents a healing. In this life, we do not have eternal health. With the only exception being those who are living when the rapture occurs, we’re all going to die. All of us are destined to die once, and then face the judgement (Hebrews 9:27). With that being the case, as Christians we know God will not always heal us. If he did, death would never come.

It’s the times when someone loses their life at an early age due to sickness that’s the most difficult to understand. We often ask why God didn’t heal them. It is not for us to always know why, but sometimes it is not his will for a person to be healed. (1 John 5:14) says that what we ask of God must be according to his will. There will be times when sickness will end in death, and other times healing will come for the glory of God (John 11:4).

In (2 Corinthians 12:7-9) we find Paul was not healed from his ailment, even though he pleaded with God. God’s response was, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

The Ultimate Healing

The Bible says by Jesus stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5) (1 Peter 2:24). Many interpret this Scripture to mean a spiritual healing, not physical. Without excepting God’s spiritual healing provided to us by following his plan of salvation, no amount of physical healings will matter in the end.

For a Christian, when the ultimate healing comes, there will be no more need for physical healing!

(Revelation 21:4) He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
