Who is Satan? He has often been portrayed as a scary little red man with horns and a pitchfork. Is this accurate?
The Ex-Angel
The ex-angel, also known as the devil or Lucifer, is the enemy of God and man. Satan was created by God as an angelic being (Ezekiel 28:14). The devil allowed pride and wickedness to cause him to be cast down from heaven. Because of a desire to raise himself above God, he not only lost his position in heaven, he also took a third of the angels with him. (Revelation 12:3-4)
(Isaiah 14:12-13) How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.
Far from being an ugly little red man, Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). He was described as perfect in beauty. (Ezekiel 28:12)
Satan Is The Enemy
Satan’s very name means “enemy” or “adversary”. From the very beginning of mankind Satan has used temptation and deception to try and get humans to rebel against God. It started with his tempting of Eve in the garden, and it continues to this very day. Jesus himself was tempted by the devil (Mathew 4:1). The Scriptures tell us the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). We are told to submit ourselves to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from us. (James 4:7)
Satan’s Desire
From the time of his rebellion, Satan’s desire has been to become like God. Just as he tried to get Jesus to worship him (Mathew 4:9), his goal is to deceive as many humans as possible into worshiping him. In doing so, he is well aware of the fact that this will end with the eternal destruction of the souls of those who do.
The Devil’s Time Is Short
He knows his time is short (Revelation 12:12), and he is well aware of his destiny in the end.
(Revelation 20:10) And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Who Is Satan? He is the exact opposite of God, and in the end he’s the ultimate loser.
