The question of whether our pets go to heaven is one of the most often asked in Christian Apologetics. That would be an indication of just how attached we as humans can become to our pets. So do pets go to heaven? Does the Bible say anything about animals being in heaven?
While the Bible does not specifically say whether our pets will or won’t go to heaven, I believe we have enough scriptures to be able to make some reasonable assumptions.
God made all creatures, including our favorite pets, but we know from reading in (Genesis 1:26), that only man was made in Gods image and likeness.
Salvation is an experience made available only to humans. In (1 Peter 1:10-12), we find out the angels themselves long to look into the salvation made available to us humans.
It would be reasonable to conclude that animals do not make conscious decisions as we do about where they are going to spend eternity. For humans, we decide if we will obey the Gospel that leads to heaven. For animals, there is no eternity waiting for them in heaven or hell based on their decisions or obedience.
Why Did God Create Animals?
So why did God create animals? The Bible in (Genesis 2:18-19) gives us the impression Gods original intent for creating animals was to keep man from being alone. While certain types of animals have been great company to millions of people over the years, it can’t be overlooked that after the flood God gave everything that lives and moves to man for food. (Genesis 9:3)
There Will Be Animals In Heaven
The Bible does indicate that animals will be part of Gods future plans when talking about the millennial kingdom and heaven (Isaiah 65:25). Will some of these animals be the exact same pets we had here on earth? Some actually do believe that God may recreate the same pets for us that we had on earth. With God all things are possible, but the Bible gives us no reason to believe this will be the case.
