Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? For some, I guess inquiring minds want to know. This controversy is one of the rather amusing topics that comes up among those seeking Bible answers.

Can the Bible settle the Adam and Eve belly button controversy once and for all? Is it of great importance whether the first couple had belly buttons? Not really, but some people are curious about these types of things. The short answer to the belly button question, probably not.

Belly Buttons 101

The belly button is the spot where the umbilical cord was once attached. This cord is a babies lifeline while inside the mother, but it is no longer needed when born. The cord is cut after birth, leaving a small part of it that falls off in a few weeks. We are left with our navel.

God Made Adam And Eve

(Genesis 2:7) Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

(Genesis 2:21-22) So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

No Tummy Buttons For Adam and Eve From Childbirth, Controversy Settled?

Neither Adam or Eve were ever inside a mother’s womb. From (Genesis 2) we know that God formed Adam from dust, and then made Eve from Adam’s rib. With belly buttons being a natural result of childbirth, there would have been no umbilical cords involved, and therefore no belly buttons for Adam and Eve, at least not from childbirth.

It is possible our creative God placed belly buttons on Adam and Eve when he made them. Would this be considered false advertising? Not if God did it!
