What are Demons?

Demons are fallen angels who rebelled against God. When Satan was thrown down to earth from heaven due to his pride, a third of the angels went with him. These former angels are often referred to as evil or unclean spirits.

(Revelation 12:9) This great dragon–the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world–was thrown down to the earth with all his angels. NLT

(Revelation 12:4) Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.

Demon Possession

A demon is a spiritual being that has the ability to possess humans (Mathew 8:16) as well as animals. The Bible tells of an instance where Jesus commanded demons to come out of two demon possessed men. The demons begged Jesus, “If you are going to cast us out the men, send us into the herd of pigs.” Jesus said to them,”Go!” They then came out of the men and went into the pigs. The whole herd then rushed down a steep bank into a lake and died in the water (Mathew 8:28-32). Jesus obviously had the ability to cast out demons (Luke 4:35), but he also gave this ability to his disciples (Mathew 10:1) and born again Christians (Acts 19:12).

A Demon’s Purpose

From the point of their rebellion forward, a demon’s sole purpose has been to oppose God and his people in every way possible. Along with Satan, they disguise themselves as servants of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:15). The Bible says we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Many people will abandon the Christian faith and follow things taught by demons (1 Timothy 4:1). While this will be true for some, it will not be so for everyone. There will be some that neither death, life, angels, demons, are anything else will be able to separate them from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). A Christian has no reason to fear demons because the one who is in a Christian is greater than the one who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

Just as Satan is aware of his fate, demons know what awaits them in the end. When Jesus started to cast them out of the two men in (Mathew 8:29) they shouted, “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” In the end they will get the punishment for their wicked deeds that they deserve. (2 Corinthians 11:15)
