Who was Joseph Barsabbas (Justus) in the Bible?

Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) was one of the two men nominated to replace Judas Iscariot as an apostle after Judas betrayed Jesus and then committed suicide. The other man was Matthias.

The One Not Chosen

According to the Bible, whoever the replacement was for this position had to be chosen from among the men who had been with the apostles the entire time they had traveled with Jesus. This included from the time Jesus was baptized by John, until they witnessed his resurrection.

Both Joseph and Matthias met the qualifications to become the apostle that replaced Judas, but only one could be chosen. The apostles prayed for God to show them who he had chosen for the replacement. Then they cast lots and chose Matthias to join the eleven. This left Joseph Barsabbas as the one not chosen. (Acts 1:21-26)

What Happened To Joseph Barsabbas After He Wasn’t Chosen?

The Bible gives no indication as to what happened to Joseph (Justus) after he was not chosen. He is only mentioned in (Acts 1). After this nothing else is known about him, biblically speaking.

There is a good possibility Joseph was one of the 70 disciples mentioned in (Luke 10:1). No names are given in this particular verse, but tradition says he was among the men who were appointed by Jesus to travel to the towns that he was going to visit.

Also according to tradition, Joseph went on to become Bishop of Eleutheropolis, and would later die a martyr.
