What is the Lake of Fire?

A fiery image that represents the lake of fire in the Bible.
What is the lake of fire and who will go there?

A Place Where The Fire Never Goes Out

The words lake of fire can be found four times in the book of Revelation. The term is used to describe the place we most often refer to as hell. In (Mark 9:43) hell is said to be a place where the fire never goes out.

(Revelation 19:20) And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. ESV

(Revelation 20:10) and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. ESV

(Revelation 20:14) Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.

(Revelation 20:15) Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Who Will Be Thrown Into The Lake Of Fire

This eternal fire is a real place that has been prepared as a final destination for many.

  • The Devil and his angels. (Mathew 25:41)
  • Anyone whose name is not found written in the book of life. (Revelation 20:15)
  • The cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars. (Revelation 21:8)

We are all destined to die once, and then we face judgement (Hebrews 9:27). The Bible says the lake of fire is the second death (Revelation 20:14, Revelation 21:8). For those who experience this second death, it is eternal and there is no hope of escape. The only good thing about this lake is that it can be avoided. God is not wanting anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9), but even so many will choose not to follow God’s plan of salvation. For this reason, the devil and his angels (demons) will not be alone in hell.

(Mathew 25:41) “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
