Who was Lot’s Wife? What was her name?

Lot’s wife pillar of salt

Lot’s wife makes only a brief, but unforgettable appearance in the Bible in Genesis 19. Unfortunately, it is her disobedience in this brief appearance that she will always be remembered for.

The Angel’s Warning

Before God destroyed the wicked city of Sodom, he sent angels into the city with a warning for Lot, Abraham’s nephew, to get out before this destruction took place. The Bible says when Lot hesitated to leave, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and rushed them to safety outside the city. When they were safely out of the city, one of the angels ordered, “Run for your lives! And don’t look back or stop anywhere in the valley! Escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away!” (Genesis 19:16-17)

A Pillar Of Salt

When Lot’s wife disobeyed the angel’s warning and looked back at the destruction of the city that she had just fled from, she turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26).

We are reminded by Jesus himself of this disobedience in the Gospel of Luke. With a simple warning Jesus said to, “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32). Whatever her reasoning was for turning and looking back at where she had came from, it led to her most unusual death.

What Was The Name Of Lot’s Wife

We are not given the name of Lot’s wife in the Bible. She is always referred to as “Lot’s wife.” However, according to Jewish traditions her name was “Ado” or “Edith”.
