What is The Golden Rule in the Bible?

It is known as “The Golden Rule.” Treating others the way you would want them to treat you. While you will not find the term “Golden Rule” in the Bible, the phrase itself has become the popular name given to the principle that Jesus taught at the Sermon on the Mount.

The Golden Rule Scriptures

The Golden Rule appears twice in the New Testament, once in Mathew and again in Luke.

(Mathew 7:12) So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

(Luke 6:31) Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Do Unto Others Wrong Before They Can Do it to You?

The idea of treating others the way we want to be treated is a principle the world needs a lot more of. Much of the world’s mentality seems to be just the opposite, do unto others wrong before they can do it to you. As Christians, we obviously should not be following the examples of the way the world is acting.

Remembering how we would want family, friends, church members, and co-workers to treat us has the potential to cause us to be much nicer to others. There is a good possibility all of the niceness you are dishing out will be returned in favor by those who you have treated kindly.

Jesus is amazing in the way he sums up so much in one verse. He knows it is in almost all of our natures to want to be treated with love, respect, and kindness. However it is that you would want to be treated, simply treat others the same. There may be a few rare individuals out there, but for the most part no one wants to be treated mean. Jesus certainly knew this when he gave us “The Golden Rule.”
