What does it mean to be Born Again?

You must be born again. John 3:7

“Born again” is a term most Christians are very familiar with. For those who are not Christians, it is what you will most likely hear when you ask the question, “What do I have to do to be saved?”

You Must Be Born Again

In (John 3:1-7), we read about a Pharisee named Nicodemus who comes late one night to speak with Jesus. He is told by Jesus, “No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” Nicodemus then asked the questions, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

Jesus replies, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, you must be born again.”

It is apparent that Nicodemus, even as a religious leader of that day, did not understand what Jesus meant when he said you must be born again. Jesus was not referring to a second physical birth. He was speaking of a spiritual birth.

Repentance + Baptism + Holy Ghost = Born Again

To be “born again” means a person must sincerely repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus, and then as promised in (Acts 2:38), that person will be filled with the Holy Ghost.

When Jesus spoke of being born of water and Spirit, he was speaking of baptism by immersion in water, and receiving the Holy Spirit. This is the one and only way a person will enter the kingdom of God. It is the new birth salvation experience that leads to eternal life in heaven with Jesus Christ!

(1 Peter 1:23) For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God.
