Who was Dorcas (Tabitha) in the Bible?

A gazelle that represents Dorcas (Tabitha) in the Bible.
The story of Dorcas is found in (Acts 9:36-42). Dorcas, whose Greek name was Tabitha (which means ” a gazelle”), was a disciple who lived in the city of Joppa. The Bible says she was always doing good things and helping the poor. The time came when she became very sick and died. Her body was washed for burial and then placed in an upstairs room.

Tabitha, Get Up

The disciples had heard that Peter was in the nearby town of Lydda. They sent two men to Peter and urged him to come as soon as possible. Peter returned with the disciples. When he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room. It was most certainly quite a scene, as all the widows stood around Peter crying and showing him all the clothing Dorcas had made for them while she was still alive.

After Peter sent everyone out of the room, he got down on his knees and prayed. He turned toward the dead body of the woman and said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Peter then called for all of the believers and the widows, and presented her to them alive. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. (Acts 9:36-42)

A Few Verses Tell Us A Lot About Dorcas

In just a few verses from the Bible, we learn a lot about Dorcas. We read about a Christian woman who was putting works with her faith, as the Bible says she was always doing good things and helping the poor. Even as she lay dead in the upstairs room, the widows are crying and showing Peter clothes she had made for them.

She obviously had a great impact in the lives of those around her. By all appearances from Scripture, she seem to have been a selfless individual who put others first. With her death, and then being raised from the dead, Dorcas was used by the Lord to bring revival to the city of Joppa!
