The English word Bible comes from or translates from the Latin word “Biblia”, as well as the Greek word “ta biblia” and “Byblos”, which means “books”. The term “ta biblia” was used as early as 223 AD by the Greeks when referring to the Scriptures. These 66 books that were inspired by God and written by forty-four different authors have all been placed together into one book that is now referred to in English as the Bible.

What We Call The Bible, They Called The Scriptures

While we generally refer to God’s Word as the Bible or the Holy Bible, Jesus and his disciples, along with the Apostle Paul referred to God’s written Word as “the Scriptures” or “Holy Scriptures”.

(Mathew 21:24) Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

(Luke 24:32) They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

(2 Timothy 3:15) and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
