What is Faith?

Image of the Bible scripture Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.
What is faith according to the Bible? What does it mean to have faith?

Faith Defined

(Hebrews 11:1) Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen: it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. NLT

According to the dictionary, faith is a complete trust or confidence in something or someone. It is also defined as a strong belief in God. When people speak about faith, God is usually involved in the conversation. For a Christian, faith is putting all of our confidence, hopes, and dreams that we have in this life into the hand’s of God. In exchange for giving him our lives, we have a hope that even though we have never seen heaven, there is an eternity in heaven with Jesus that is awaiting us.

It takes faith to be confident that the answers to our prayers will actually happen. When we have not seen the answer, yet we are sure in our hearts and minds that God has heard us and will provide our needs, this is faith.

Faith Is Necessary In Christianity

(Hebrews 11:6) And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seeks him.

In Christianity, it takes faith to please God. If you never have an assurance within yourself that God actually does exists, you will never seek after him. If you never seek after him, you will never be rewarded with the salvation he has provided for us. This will never be pleasing to God because he doesn’t want anyone to perish according to (2 Peter 3:9).

Examples Of  Faith In The Bible

There are many examples of individuals in the Bible that demonstrated amazing confidence in God.

(Hebrews 11:7) By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.

(Hebrews 11:8) By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

These next verses show us the great things that can be accomplished with faith.

(Hebrews 11:32-34) And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.

Do I Have Enough?

Many people become worried that they may not have enough faith to please God. Because of doubt, they question whether their belief is sufficient to be saved. It helps to know that Jesus said in (Mathew 17:20) that if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for us. The point being, it doesn’t take a lot. The old song says, “You don’t need a whole lot, just use what you’ve got.”

Doubting Thomas

All things considered, it can be reassuring to know that we are not alone if we have moments of doubt. Due to his doubt, “Doubting Thomas” is the nickname given to one of the 12 disciples who walked with Jesus. He is most remembered for doubting the resurrection of Jesus. Take a look at what Thomas says in the book of John. Keep in mind this man walked with Jesus for many months and witnessed many miracles.

(John 20:25) So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord”! But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my fingers where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe“.

If you know the rest of the story, you know that Thomas got the chance to do just what he said it would take for him to believe. Jesus told him to put his finger where the nails were and put his hand into his side. He then tells Thomas, “Stop doubting and believe.”

It is at these moments that we can pray the (Mark 9:24) prayer. The sick child’s father cried out to Jesus, “Lord I believe, help me overcome my unbelief!” Doubt has the ability to cloud the truth, but prayer has a way of ridding us of doubt.

Blind Faith Is Not Required

With the understanding that there may be moments of doubt for some, blind faith, which is defined as a belief that is not based on reason or evidence, is not required to believe in the existence of God. At “The Bible Answer” we provide many reasons and evidence to support the existence of God, and the reliability of the Bible.

The God of the Bible has provided those who are willing to seek him with all the faith that is required to begin our walk with the Lord. The faith that gets us started, with God’s help, has a way of growing to a point that it can’t be shaken. God will always require a degree of faith. However, when you begin to examine the evidence, you come to realize that putting all of your confidence and hope in God is the only thing that makes sense.
